ASME Congress to Feature Engineering for Global Development Keynote and Forum

ASME Congress to Feature Engineering for international Development Keynote and Forum ASME Congress to Feature Engineering for Global Development Keynote and Forum ASME Congress to Feature Engineering for Global Development Keynote and ForumOver the past several years, the engineering of affordable, appropriate and sustainable solutions for the developing world - or Engineering for Global Development (EGD) - has become a critical area of concern for both the engineering profession and for ASME. From co-founding the Engineering for Change partnership to establishing an EGD programs area within the Society, ASME is committed to fostering the research and collaboration necessary to improve the quality of life in the worlds poorest communities. For that reason, Engineering for Global Development has been selected as the theme of the 2014 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Montreal, Canada. The 2014 Congress will take distributionspolitik from Nov. 14 -20 at the Palais des Congres convention center in downtown Montreal. The Congress will feature a full day of EGD-related programming on Monday, Nov. 17, starting with a special opening session and keynote that will lead into a three-part EGD Forum continuing throughout the afternoon. The opening session keynote, which will be presented as part of ASMEs successful Decision Point Dialogue series, will feature social entrepreneurs and representatives from industry and academia discussing the various issues associated with bringing appropriate technologies to underserved communities - and the crucial role engineers play in this process. The session will address such topics as economic trends in emerging markets, funding mechanisms in social ventures, engineering rigor within the user-centric entwurf process, and cultivating partnerships with industry. John Hockenberry will be the moderator for the Engineering for Global Development opening keynote session at the 2014 Congress in Montreal. Panelists for this special keynote session, to take place from 800 a.m.-930 a.m., will include Paul Polak, founder and chief executive officer of Windhorse International and Paul Polak Enterprises Bryan Willson, professor of mechanical engineering at Colorado State University, founder of the universitys Engines and Energy Conversion Lab and co-director of the Energy Institute and Shyam Rajan, chief technology officer for GE Healthcare India. The keynote will be moderated by award-winning journalist John Hockenberry, host of National Public Radios The Takeaway, as well as the moderator for second ASME Decision Point Dialogues event that took place in Washington, D.C., earlier this year. A continental breakfast will be served prior to the opening session, from 730 a.m.-800 a.m. The EGD Forum, encompassing three informative sessions for those who would like to learn more on the topic, will follow the keynote session. The Forum sessions are intended to dig deeper into topics introduced during the keynote session using case studies and discussions that illustrate the basic concepts of global development, including the user-centric design process, cultural challenges, field testing of working prototypes, and the critical roles academia, industry and local communities play in ensuring success in the EGD space. The first session, Case Studies in Global Development from 945 p.m.-1130 a.m., will cover EGDs opportunities for the entrepreneur, the positive social impact engineers can make in the developing world, and first-hand accounts of what to expect when bringing technologies to these emerging markets. Lyle Ruppert, principal systems engineer at Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp., will join panelists from the breakfast keynote as a presenter for this session. (From left) Paul Polak of Windhorse International and Paul Polak Enterprises, Shyam Rajan from GE Healthcare, and Bryan Willson of Colorado State University w ill be the panelists for the Congress keynote session, which will be presented as part of the ASME Decision Point Dialogues series. How to Silence the Voice of Doubt

How to Silence the Voice of DoubtHow to Silence the Voice of DoubtIt starts innocently enough- you had a bad morning at work. Then someone snaps at you as you slip off to grab some Starbucks. And then your thought process spirals into an all-out avalanche Should I get a new job? What kind of job should I look for? Am I on the right track? What do I really want to do with my life? How am I going to make it to the end of the week, let alone through the next year? The worst parte is, once the self-questioning starts, it doesnt stop- and it seeps in to all the other aspects of your life, too What if I picked the wrong partner? Why did I choose this apartment? Are these the right shoes to wear with this skirt? When you finally get a break for lunch, its all you can do to choose from one of five sandwich options.Stop.Yes, its important to take an honest look at your life. But women can be prone to getting into a spiral of overwhelming self-doubt that drags us down rather than helping us make productive decisions. Sometimes, what you need the most is just to stop the running commentary and clear your head, instead. Here are four simple tips for silencing that voice of doubt1. Surround Yourself with Positive MessagesSometimes, it helps to replace your own internal voice with someone elses. So read a good book (check out our virtual book club for a place to start), post inspirational quotes on your mirror, or listen to music that makes you feel good, be it pumped-up gangster rap or soothing acoustic crooning. Drown out the little voice that says you cant and fill its absence with words and rhythms that keep you moving forward, that tell you youre amazing and capable and beautiful and whatever else you want to be.2. Turn off Distractions (If Just For an Hour)My senior year of college, one of my professors asked us to do a 24-hour media fast no cell phone, internet, email, magazines, newspapers, nothing (though books were OK). Try disconnecting, even if its just for an afte rnoon, to reconnect with your offline persona. Really be present and attentive to the world in front of you rather than the one in the cloud. Meet with a supportive friend and talk about your lives in more depth than you can capture in a tweet or status update. Do something tangible like baking cookies, working out and reveling in your bodys strength, or crafting something beautiful.3. Take Some Time for YourselfSome of us need more time alone than others. If your job keeps you hopping from one client to the next and you leave work only to spend all of your free time with your friends and family, are you getting the reflection time you need? Grab a journal and lock yourself in your bedroom or jump in your car and drive until youve cleared your head of the days clutter. Once youve relaxed into your own skin again, youll be able to be more present to all the people in your life- and to yourself, too.4. Focus on What Youve Done, Not What You HaventI know we told you that you are not yo ur resume, and its true that no single sheet of paper can capture all dimensions of who you are. But sometimes you need to remember how cool your accomplishments really are. Did you graduate cum laude? Become a member of your departments honor society? Did you head up a community service project or write a pretty awesome article?Think about those accomplishments and how happy and successful they made you feel. Youre selling yourself short if you only think of the things you havent done instead of all of the fantastic and unique things you have. Build on those.Above all, dont be so hard on yourself. You dont have to take on the world at 100 miles an hour to know youre moving in the right direction. Sometimes you just need to take a moment to remember what brings you joy and what brought you to this point in your life in the first place. What are your favorite things to do when life gets overwhelming? How do you silence the voice of self-doubt?Photo courtesy of Photostock.

How to Stay Organized When You Work at Home

How to Stay Organized When You Work at HomeHow to Stay Organized When You Work at HomeOrganizing your home life and work life is tough enough for everyone. Those who work at home, though, encounterspecial challenges in keeping both their family and work obligations in their rightful places as the two realms mingle under one roof. Everyones style and ability for organizing differ, so a one-size-fits-all approach definitely doesnt work. However, these resources cover the types of things youll need to consider as you go about organizing your work-at-home life. Organizing Your Time Time is a precious commodity. Making the most of your time, by eliminating the commute, tops the list of reasons to work at home for many work-at-home parents, but time saved one place can be time wasted in another if you dont take control of your time. Setting Expectations Effective time management for work-at-home parents starts with creating some ground rules for both your family and for yourself. O ne of those rules should be to set your working hours in advance. This will keep you from working too much or working too little, whichever is your tendency. It brings better family balance because everyone knows what to expect. Minimizing Distractions No matter how good you are sticking to your ground rules, there will be distractions when you work at home. They will just be different from those that eat away at the day of your counterparts back in the office. Learning what they are for you and how to deal with distractions is an important skill. Choosing a Calendar System Use a calendar system that can be shared with all members of the family.Google Calendarwork particularly well because they are free so children can each have their own, but parents can have access to them. Likewise, children see whats going on for everyone else. For a calendar that everyone has access to, theres also always a paper calendar hanging in the kitchen. The problem is this type of calendar is th at you dont have it with you when you are at the doctors or at a school function and need to add to it. Somewhere between the electronic and old-fashioned paper calendar is a weekly printout of all upcoming events hung in a prominent spot. Creating this every Sunday night will also help you spot conflicts in the family schedulein the coming week. Organizing Your Spaces When your professional and personal lives occur in the same location, you need to take care to organize that physical space in a way that is conducive to productivity for both parts of your life. WorkSpaces A dedicated workspace is essential to anyone who works at home.Ideally, your home office should be a room (with a door) that is not used for any other purpose. Most of us, though, just dont have that kind of extra space in our homes, so we have to compromise. It might be in a corner of a room, a bedroom or the dining room. Whats important is that this particular space is dedicated to that one purpose. Settin g up your laptop on the kitchen table does not qualify as a home office plan your home office space with your weaknesses, routines and your jobs and your familys needs in mind. Are you easily distracted by children vying for your attention while you work? Choose a space far from their play areas. Are you trying to do double duty by watching children while you work? Put yourself nearby them. Will you need quiet for teleconferencing and phone calls? Pick an out-of-the-way room with a door, like a bedroom. Whatever area you choose for your office, you need, at a minimum, a desk, chair, computer and some shelving or other storage space.Take time to make it an inviting space, decorating it with pictures or mementos in the way that you might a cubicle in the office. You should enjoy being in this space. Dont let others use the space when you are not, and dont use it yourself for activities outside of your professional work. Dont pay your bills there or fill out forms for your kids school. Keeping those professional and personal obligations from melting together starts with maintaining separate spaces. Family Spaces Keeping that workspace dedicated and separate is a lot easier if you have the other spaces in your home well organized. Create a family information hub.Choose a space where you accumulate family-related information, e.g. mail that comes in, papers from school, etc. If you do use a paper calendar or a weekly listing of events, this is where it should be. If your kids are in school, make your life a bit easier by having a basket for them to deposit all the papers they bring home from school. You have a separate basket for bills and other paperwork. Pick the area where you will organize and process this information. It could be in the same area where it is accumulated, or it could be near your dedicated workspace. Just dont mix it with your work-related papers. In this case, its okay to pull out your laptop and use the kitchen table but create a space wher e all the needed items belong when you are not working on them. You may be tempted to use your work computer to complete these tasks. Just like many of us dont have extra rooms that can be exclusively used as home offices, we cant all necessarily afford extra computer equipment. If at all possible, use a tablet or another computer for personal use. If you are employed telecommuter, you may have already agreed that company equipment is not for personal use as part of your telework agreement. If you are a freelancer or home business owner, it may seem more efficient to have just one computer but consider buying an inexpensive netbook or reusing an older computer. When you mix the personal and professional use of your computer, before long others in your family will be using it as well.

Making Mental Health a Priority For Employees - Spark Hire

Making Mental Health a Priority For Employees - Spark HireMental health is emotional, psychological, and social well-being. With one-third of your life, an average of 90,000 hours, spent at work throughout our lifetime, its important for mental health to be part of HR pros and employers regular considerations.Mentally healthy employees want to come to work, act as a team, accomplish goals, and stick around. Which ties your focus on mental health to a positive impact on employee retention. In honor of World Mental Health Day on October 15, we reached out to experts to hear about the mental health awareness strategies theyve found success with. Find out how these companies are focusing on mental health to keep employees happier, healthier, and employed longerOffer flexible hours and remote workWhen we leidice that one of our team members is struggling, we make sure that they have several ways to unwind. First, we encourage flexible hours and working remotely. If you dont feel well enoug h to work today take a day off. If you can work but dont feel like going to the office you can work from home, as long as you stay on top of your daily tasks. Moreover, we have a practice of sabbaticals. If an employee feels like they are nearing a melting point, we encourage them to take a sabbatical. These are usually periods of one month when the employee takes unpaid time off. Weve tried it before with a few employees (including myself) and the results have been overwhelmingly positive.Olga Mykhoparkina, Chief absatzwirtschaft Officer at ChantyWe encourage flexible hours and working remotely for team members who may be struggling. olmykh ChantyClick To TweetTalk mental health regularly with your teamWhen employees are unhappy or dealing with mental health issues and not getting the support they need, they simply cant bring their best to work and they arent likely to stick around. Weve found that letting people shift time in order to go to a professional to get the help they nee d has been invaluable.Weve intentionally introduced mental health into monthly crew meetings by being vulnerable about our own struggles. Being vulnerable and expressing empathy gives employees permission to come forward in private and ask for the time they need. And you must keep it confidential at all times. The results of this have been great. Our employees not only come to work and are much more productive because they are getting the tools they need to live a better life, but weve also seen increased loyalty and leadership. We dont expect everyone to be happy all the time, but healthy, supported employees equate to a healthier, more successful company.Taylor Hill, co-founder and CEO at Spark MarketerWeve intentionally introduced mental health into monthly crew meetings by being vulnerable about our own struggles. taylorkhill SparkMarketerClick To TweetFocus on the physical health of employeesAs there is a direct link between physical wohlbefinden and mental health, we promote ph ysical health by reimbursing our employees for expenses related to exercise. We also hold regular sports tournaments with cash prizes up for grabs. We encourage everyone to take part in these tourneys by holding them during work hours and featuring all kinds of sports, from badminton and ping-pong to five-a-side soccer and baseball.More directly, we take the stress out of our employees lives by offering full access to several experienced and competent local counselors who we list on our employee resources pages. We pay these counselors directly for their time, but employees identities remain anonymous and of course, the content of their counseling sessions stays confidential. Our counselors are fully licensed and can make referrals to other specialists such as psychiatrists and substance abuse specialists, for example.Last Mental Health Awareness Day, we held a panel discussion. One of our C-suite members talked about his own struggles overcoming social anxiety. He talked about how despite his role, he found it difficult to speak up in meetings, make small talk with other people in the office, and join in with team-building exercises. He went on to speak about how effective the cognitive behavioral therapy that he had received from one of our listed counselors. By opening up like this, he gave the signal to each and every one of us that we didnt have to ignore or hide our mental health issues.Employee retention has soared in the past few years as weve introduced these measures. Weve made progress in creating an accepting, blame-free attitude toward mental health issues at Resume Genius. There is always more to be done of course, but weve started on the right track.Sam Johns, HR specialist at Resume GeniusWe promote physical health by reimbursing our employees for expenses related to exercise and holding sports tournaments. Many emotional/mental health issues in the workplace stem from burnout.Part of preventing burnout is making sure employees arent overworked. Most of the time, depending on the industry, the obligation to work late is simply due to a lack of optimization in terms of processes, and not gauging the strengths and weaknesses of employees and building their role around those. I make a concentrated effort to get to know the employees and how to play to their strengths. This significantly decreases the amount of catch-up we have to play, and hopefully, keeps everybody as mentally healthy as possible. While you cant have 100 percent retention, Im still proud to see my approach working. I havent noticed employees leaving on account of being overworked or mentally unhealthy. It can be easy to slip into a mentally unhealthy mindset when your boss doesnt seem to value your input, so I always try to listen to any feedback an d demonstrate the fact that I do care about the growth of employees.Matt Edstrom, CMO at GoodLife Home LoansThe obligation to work late is due to a lack of optimization in terms of processes, and not gauging the strengths and weaknesses of employees and building their roles. Unveiling the top-50 most prestigious consulting firms

Unveiling the top-50 most prestigious consulting firmsUnveiling the top-50 most prestigious consulting firmsThe 89 firms included in this years Vault Consulting Survey were asked to satz each consulting firm in the survey on a scale from 1 to 10 based on prestige, with 10 being the most prestigious. Consultants were unable to rate their own firm, and they were asked to rate only those firms with which they were familiar. Vault collected the survey results and averaged the score for each firm. The firms were then ranked, with the highest score being No. 1, down to No. 50. Remember that Vaults top-50 prestigious consulting firms are chosen by practicing consultants at top consulting firms. Vault does not choose or influence these rankings. The rankings measure perceived prestige (as determined by consulting professionals) and not revenue, size or lifestyle. This years prestige ranking shows a startlingly low rate of movement from last year. The top-10 firms are entirely the same, wit h some slight adjustments in positioning HR consulting firm Mercer LLC moved up two spots, while both Monitor Group and PwC moved down one notch. Firms that made some of the larger jumps in the rankings (A.T. Kearney, ZS Associates, Diamond Management Tech Consultants) suggest that the factors that improved firms perception in the industry are stability in the face of recession and targeted industry focus. Strategic IT consulting is on the rise as companies seek to streamline their processes and cut down on back-office costs, and health care consulting will continue to play an integral role as the new legislation continues to unfold. Weve also added some new firms into the mix this year. Grant Thornton (No. 28) is a large, well-known accounting/consulting shop, while The Cambridge Group (No. 35) has made a name for itself in the growth strategy space, focusing on customer demand. We also dug deeper into some of the hot industries right now, adding a few more health care consulting shops (The Hackett Group, Campbell Alliance Group and The Chartis Group), and a couple from the increasingly-in-demand turnaround management realm (see CRG Partners Group). All in all, our prestige list provides a comprehensive roadmap of whos who in the consulting industryranging from big consulting shops to smaller, niche firms, and spanning a vast swath of industries. Stay tuned next Tuesday for our release of specific practice area rankings.
